A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cantor Niren earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance and Music Education from Carnegie Mellon University. Her calling to the cantorate began while working at Temple Beth El in Boca Raton, where she discovered the joy of congregational life.
She received cantorial ordination and a Master’s degree in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City and completed a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education as a chaplain intern at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. For her thesis, Israeli Fusion: The Convergence of Sacred and Secular in Music and Prayer, she explored her passion for Israeli music—a passion that continues to inspire her innovative repertoire and her commitment to blending Israeli culture with American Reform Judaism.
Leading
Guided by a deep belief in the power of music to connect and transform, Cantor Niren creates experiences that bridge tradition and innovation. She curates spaces on the bimah, in classrooms, and beyond, where Jewish identity, creativity, and spiritual expression come alive. Her work celebrates the diversity and richness of Jewish music and inspires participation across generations.
In 2020, she launched Cantor In The Kitch, a program that brings people together through Jewish food, music, and storytelling. What began as a pandemic project has blossomed into a vibrant platform that weaves flavor, song, and shared tradition into experiences that build community and celebrate the power of memory to nourish both body and soul.
An active leader in the American Conference of Cantors, she co-chaired the 2024 ACC–GTM Israel Convention and serves on the Continuing Cantorial Professional Development Committee. That same year, she was honored with the President’s Award for Volunteerism. She also co-chaired ACC Convention worship and concert programming and has led Shabbat morning services for over 6,000 participants at the URJ Biennial Convention in Boston.
A graduate of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality’s Clergy Leadership Program, she continues to deepen her practice of mindful, heart-centered leadership.
Through her musical creativity, passion for Judaism, and ability to connect with congregants of all ages, Cantor Niren enriches the communities she serves by creating meaningful experiences rooted in music, learning and prayer. She brings joyful energy to her cantorate and believes deeply in the power of music to uplift the spirit and open quiet spaces for connection with God.
